NEW PRODUCTION FOR ENO: Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea
20-09-2007
Sensual, decadent, poetic and passionate; Monteverdi’s masterful drama illuminates the power and ambition of human desire with some of the most glorious baroque music ever written, including the love duet Pur ti miro, justly celebrated as one of the supreme moments of 17th century opera. Laurence Cummings conducts Kate Royal, Diana Montague and Robert Lloyd in a new production for ENO at the London Coliseum directed by Chen Shi-Zheng.

Acclaimed for his graceful and fluid interpretations of early work, director and choreographer Chen Shi-Zheng creates a unique and beautiful fusion of East and West, combined with dance and vivid designs. He returns to the London Coliseum following the huge critical success of his elegant staging of Monteverdi’s Orfeo for ENO in 2006.

This new production of Monteverdi’s last great opera provides the perfect vehicle for the cream of British singing talent including Lucy Crowe, Robert Lloyd, Tim Mead Diana Montague and Kate Royal (pictured), conducted by early music specialist Laurence Cummings.

Talented, young British soprano Kate Royal makes her ENO debut in the title role of Poppea following acclaimed appearances on many of the major European opera stages including the Royal Opera House, Edinburgh Festival, Glyndebourne and a stunning performance at the 2007 BBC Proms. She is also a major recording artist having collaborated with Sir Paul McCartney on his classical album Ecce Cor Meum and with the release of her first solo album with EMI this summer.
