Brighton Early Music Festival pushes early music boundaries with a star artist line up
14-09-2007
Now in its fifth year, Brighton Early Music Festival, which takes place this October, is the second largest UK event celebrating early music in all its forms. "Our hallmark is the way we make a feature of involving ensembles which push at the boundaries of early music," explains Clare Norburn, one of the Artistic Directors. "Many of the artists we promote straddle the early music/world music/folk divide or are exploring ways of combining music with dance, theatre and film. We programme medieval/jazz crossover events alongside ensembles and repertoire you would expect from a more traditional early music festival."

The 2007 festival comprises 25 events over 4 weekends in venues across Brighton and Hove. There is a feast of music from the middle ages to Mozart, around the theme of Transformations and Improvisations.  "Music by its very nature is open to endless variety and interpretation in live performance," adds Deborah Roberts. "In this year's festival we explore familiar music in different guises. For example Bach's Art of Fugue, which was written for no specific scoring, will act as a leitmotif throughout the festival, appearing in concerts by various artists in different arrangements."

With two live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3's The Early Music Show, artists in the 2007 festival include:
·     Emma Kirkby and Jakob Lindberg exploring the music of Dowland and Purcell as well as an interview programme which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 - An Audience with Emma Kirkby
·     Red Priest celebrating the influence of dance music on Bach
·     The stunning dancers and strumming guitars of the internationally acclaimed ensemble The Harp Consort
·     Lively dance music and witty, romantic and bawdy dance songs from The Dufay Collective
·     Gothic Voices celebrating a feast of medieval music including works by Hildegard von Bingen
·     Handel's tour de force oratorio Israel in Egypt conducted John Hancorn with a line up of top young soloists and the BREMF Singers and Baroque Players
·     A staged performance of the medieval music drama The Play of Daniel by The Clerk's Group
·     The Galeazzi Ensemble in a colourful mix of great classics by Bach, Mozart and Haydn
·     Eclipse, Respectable Groove, Musica Secreta and Horses Brawl
·     Choral workshop by Edward Wickham of The Clerk's Group
·     Improvisation workshop for instrumentalists of all kinds and ages by members of The Dufay Collective
·     Performances by in informal settings by 9 ensembles, comprised of young rising stars on our new Early Music Live scheme

The Brighton Early Music Festival runs from 6th - 28th October.
