Edinburgh International Festival 2007 celebrates Early Music with a landmark series of concerts, recitals and opera by some of the genre’s leading musicians. From the crème de la crème to the cutting edge, this wide-ranging programme weaves its way through the classic and lesser known work of composers including Monteverdi, Marais and Desprez, and uses early music as inspiration across very modern productions.

Highlights include:

Monteverdi’s Madrigals

Dates: Saturday 11, Monday 13, Wednesday 15, Thursday 16 and Friday 17 August 6.00pm
Place: Greyfriars Kirk

Includes harpsichord virtuoso Rinaldo Alessandrini and premier vocal ensemble Concerto Italiano who will be performing madrigals from all eight of Monteverdi’s books including the famous Madrigals of Love and War.

L’Orfeo

Dates: Saturday 11, Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 August 7.15pm
Place: Edinburgh Festival Theatre

Step back into the seventeenth century, and a ravishing Arcadian paradise, for highly theatrical entertainment in classical style. This gorgeous production uses modern stage technology to recreate the spectacle of the very first operas. Conducted by Jordi Savall.

Harmony and Humanity

Dates: Monday 20 August – Saturday 1 September 6.00pm
Place: Greyfriars Kirk

Additional performance Tuesday 21 August 9.00pm

A new series of concerts in the atmospheric surroundings of Greyfriars Kirk. Trace the development of European vocal music through the middle ages and the renaissance, to the time when Monteverdi created L’Orfeo. Includes performances by La Venexiana, Huelgas Ensemble and The Tallis Scholars.

Bank of Scotland Queens Hall Series

Dates: Saturday 11 August – Saturday 1 September 11.00am
Please note: No Sunday performances

A series of 18 mid-morning concerts performed across three weeks and staged in the intimate surroundings of The Queens Hall, many of which focus on early music repertoire. Highlight performers include Jordi Savall, Mark Padmore, and Walking to Lübeck, Susan Bickley and viol consort Fretwork, Claudio Cavina and La Venexiana, Chiara Banchini and Ensemble 415.
