24 and 25 March see four concerts of music by J. S. Bach given by the Feinstein Ensemble in the Purcell Room, beginning with an afternoon concert of the trio sonatas. On the Saturday evening, the violin concertos become the focus of attention, including those in A minor and E major concerti, along with the concertos for two violins and for oboe and violin, and, imaginatively, the Sinfonia to Cantata 21.
On the Sunday morning Monica Huggett performs and talks about the sonatas for unaccompanied violin. The weekend finishes that evening with a performance of the whole of the Musical Offering by the Feinstein Ensemble, providing a rare chance to hear the richness of contrapuntal invention that Bach spun from a theme given to him as the subject for improvisation by Frederick the Great when Bach visited the court at Potsdam towards the end of his life.
