World class period performance at London’s Southbank Centre
07-02-2007
There are some fantastic concerts coming up at Southbank Centre for fans of Renaissance and Baroque music. Over the next few months, you can let the Sixteen take you on a musical journey to Mexico, see Jonathan Miller and Philip Pickett's triumphant production of L'Orfeo, and hear organist Thomas Trotter and counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky in recital.

The Sixteen
Streams of Tears
Wed 28 Feb Queen Elizabeth Hall 7.30pm

A concert of penitential music from the Iberian Peninsula and Mexico, from the period known as the 'Siglo de oro', when Spain and Portugal were masters of the great ocean and developing new lands in the Americas. This was a time when the church had money as well as a great appreciation of art in the service of faith, not only in the ducal courts of Spain and Portugal but in the new cathedrals of Mexico, which attracted the likes of Spanish composer Juan Guttierrez de Padilla to emigrate to the New World.

Tickets £25 - £8, Premium Seats £33

New London Consort
L’Orfeo
Wed 14 Mar Queen Elizabeth Hall 7.30pm

One of the highlights of recent Queen Elizabeth Hall seasons was the staged production of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, directed by Jonathan Miller and conducted by Philip Pickett, with a packed house and a sackful of rave reviews. The production went on to win international acclaim in Bergen, Beijing and Paris. Mark Tucker again takes the title role in this London revival, opening the New London Consort's tour of 30 major venues worldwide celebrating the 400th anniversary of the opera's first performance.

Tickets £31 - £9

Thomas Trotter
Bach: Six Trio Sonatas, BWV.525-530
Sat 31 Mar 2007 Queen Elizabeth Hall 7.30pm

The charm of JS Bach’s Trio Sonatas belies the fact that they are among the most difficult of his organ works to perform, though they sound effortless in the hands of Thomas Trotter. The Flentrop organ in the Queen Elizabeth Hall was built in 1966 with the music of Bach and his contemporaries in mind, and is ideally suited to the music of this period, showing the clarity of Bach’s musical architecture to perfection.

Tickets £11, Premium Seats £15

Philippe Jaroussky & Ensemble Artaserse
Handel and Scarlatti Arias
Fri 25 May Purcell Room 7.45pm

A sensation in France, Philippe Jaroussky has in recent years become one of the world's most distinguished counter-tenors. Described in La Terrasse as 'a young singer with the tone of an angel and the virtuosity of the Devil', he has worked with many of the most celebrated Early Music groups, and brought the house down at last year's Southbank Centre Early Music Weekend. In this concert we hear him perform music by Handel and Scarlatti with his own Ensemble Artaserse.

Tickets £22 - £11
