It is a group that includes such well-known names as Manuel Cardoso and Duarte Lobo, and this year the focus of attention in the daily workshops will be on the magnificent Requiem of Cardoso. Participants will work both as a complete choir and in groups under a number of conductors, with sessions devoted to differing approaches to interpretation and instilling an awareness of the cultural context of the work.
The conductors involved include Peter Phillips, director of the Tallis Scholars (who made a recording of the Cardoso Requiem), Owen Rees, director of A Capella Portuguesa and a specialist in Iberian Renaissance repertoire, and the young Portuguese choral director Armando Possante. The workshops will culminate in a final concert in which participants will join forces with Eborae Musica. In addition to the workshops concerts will be given in the cathedral by Grupo Vocal Introitus directed by Aníbal Coutinho(4 October), the Chamber Choir from the University of Lisbon (5 October), and the Hilliard Ensemble (6 October).
To complete a full diary of events, there will be a conference held under the auspices of the Portuguese musicologist Rui Vieira Nery and a number of lectures. The workshop is open to participants of mixed ability and observers. Details of registration can be obtained from: eboraemusica@mail.evora.net
