What I have always admired about this ensemble is the way it combines a creamy blend with the distinct individual presence of each voice. This is the key to their highly sensitive treatment of such text-orientated motets as O crux, ave, and, indeed, more complex works, such as Lamentabatur Jacob, which also rely on the performers’ awareness of text, over a much longer span. This would be of little avail, of course, were it not also for the singers’ profound understanding of the melodic nature of the polyphony they sing.
Morales is not always the most obvious melodist, but there is a feeling throughout the Mass that the singers perfectly understand its intricacies, so that the listener is constantly aware of a very strong sense of direction. The recording quality is excellent, neither too dry nor too resonant, and the disc benefits from an excellent insert note by Cristina Urchuegia. Though I believe more Jachet of Mantua should be a priority for this group, this disc makes one desire a Morales series in no uncertain terms. IVAN MOODY
