Boccherini’s Spanish qualities were adopted ones. Like Domenico Scarlatti, he found the Spanish climate particularly well suited to his musical development, and his debt to Spain is the theme of Le Concert des Nations’ new album. Its conductor, Jordi Savall, is intuitively familiar with these relationships, and instinctively understands their significance.

The famous Guitar Quintet in D, with its popular origins, is a good example of the above; here it is played with utmost verve. Track 3, the Fandango, is a miracle of litheness. Savall is a real magician in terms of sound, drawing poetic effects and a myriad of colour from this jewel of a piece, in which the ambiguous smile of a Goya figure combines with insistent dance rhythms.

Boccherini’s orchestral writing - his works are among those that led to the triumph of the classical style - is also sampled, and Savall and his orchestra are every bit as inventive in the D-minor Symphony, op. 37 no. 3 and the Symphony in A, op, 35 no. 3.

In my opinion, these performances will become the definitive versions in the Boccherini discography. They feature a Spanish-inspired, shall we say, vivacity of sound, which distinguishes them from their Germanic counterparts. Le Concert des Nations’ version of Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid, interpreted in a way that is both playful and dreamlike, surpasses all other recordings.

I was delighted with this album, which should quite simply be considered an event.
