Le Marche and its theatres
The Marches (Le Marche) is one of the most beautiful but least known regions of Italy. Although Mozart journeyed through the Marches in 1771 on his way from Naples to Bologna, it is not this historical association which makes the area a peculiarly apposite place in which to establish a festival celebrating his music.
The compelling factor is the presence here of an amazing concentration of theatres built during the composer’s lifetime or shortly after. No other part of the world comes close to matching Le Marche for its heritage of historic theatres. And, of course, by modern standards all the theatres are small – most seat fewer than three hundred.
Here is a truly unique opportunity to hear the music of Mozart and his peers in buildings which are both contemporary with the music and of an appropriate size.
