Not that the first decade has been all plain sailing. Each issue has been invested with enormous enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism, and the generous encouragement and positive feedback we have received has made the difficult times easier to forget, and has allowed us to start each day with renewed spirit. Neither could we have reached this point without the excellent offerings from our contributors around the world, who have taken it upon themselves to make Goldberg the most important international publication in the field of early music. The roll call of valued collaborators is an extensive one, and there are so many names that should be mentioned, but we really could not omit some of those that have been with us from the very beginning, such as Brian Robins, Maricarmen Gómez, José Luis Gil Aristu and María Teresa Martín.
As we approached issue number 50 it seemed only appropriate that we should first pay homage to the composer who gives his name to our magazine, and then undertake an assessment of recent times. This is why the name Johann Gottlieb Goldberg figures twice on the cover and Professor Peter Wollny of the University of Leipzig offers an excellent article that will surely become an essential reference point for those studying this composer. Our interview slot is dedicated to H. C. Robbins Landon, a living legend in the field of musicology, and the undisputed authority on Haydn. This is a fitting tribute and we take great pride in being able to include him in our publication. In assessing the recent past we have asked some of the leading authorities in the world of early music to share with us their thoughts on its development over the past decade, and to comment on the current situation as found across different countries and contexts. In similar vein, and fully aware of the subjectivity intrinsic to such a task, our critics and Editorial Board have selected what they consider to be the fifty most important recordings, from the more than two thousand reviewed throughout this period. Once again, our sincere thanks to all our subscribers and readers for your loyalty, and our hopes that you enjoy this special commemorative issue.
