A very interesting programme consisting of six concerts has been put together. The first two will be given by Ensemble Organum, directed by Marcel Peres, containing two programmes of plainchant with medieval and Renaissance music. The first, on 23 June, will consist of a Mass in Toledan Mozarabic chant of the 16th century with glosas by de Cabezón, and the second (24 June) includes monophonic and polyphonic pieces from the Roman repertory of the 12th and 13th centuries.
Vincent Dumestre’s Le Poème Harmonique will perform two concerts. On 30 June they give one devoted to Spanish and French songs from the French court during the baroque era, basing its main interest on the influence of the Spanish guitar on French music, featuring works by Gaspar Sanz and Antonio Martín y Coll, among others. The second (1 July) features sacred music by Michel-Richard de Lalande, with a performance of Tenebrae, music for the Holy Week services in the Sainte Chapelle of Paris.
The final two concerts will be given by the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla (Seville Baroque Orchestra, OBS using its Spanish initials), directed on both occasions by Monica Huggett. On 7 July it commemorates the anniversary of Domenico Scarlatti with a performance of his overture from Narciso and Salve Regina. The concert will also feature compositions by Handel and Bach, composers born in the same year as Scarlatti. The soprano Nuria Rial will be the soloist for this concert.
The festival concludes with the second OBS concert, which will recall the Concert Spirituel, a concert series that took place in Paris between 1725 and 1790. The OBS analyses the evolution of these concerts with the presentation of three works composed at different points during this period: Les Elémens by Rebel, Les Boreades by Rameau and Haydn’s La Poule symphony. The symposium about the relation between France and Spain will take place from 27-30 June. It will be directed by Yvan Nommick and brings together musicologists and professors from various French and Spanish universities.
