From Thursday 20 to Wednesday 26 July, a festival of six concerts will be held in San Juan de Ortega (Iglesia de San Nicolás), Burgos (Iglesia de la Merced), Frómista (Iglesia de Santa María del Castillo), Carrión de los Condes (Monasterio de San Zoilo), Leon (Cathedral) and Ponferrada (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de La Encina), in that order. There will be no concert on Sunday 23 July.
As in previous years, admission to the concerts is free, on a "first come, first served" basis.
Tenebrae is one of the leading British vocal ensembles. Founded by its director Nigel Short, the group places special emphasis on the visual and atmospheric aspects of its performances, singing by candlelight and positioning the singers in such a way as to heighten the acoustic and aesthetic impact.
On their tour, they will perform Joby Talbot’s The Path of Miracles (a work specially commissioned for Tenebrae which received its world première in July, 2005) in Burgos, Carrión de los Condes and Leon. Talbot’s composition, which takes as its theme the Camino, or Pilgrims’ Way to Santiago, has a markedly spiritual character, using texts based on the liturgy of St. James as well as poems by Robert Dickinson.
The performances will incorporate spatial movement and stereophonic effects, with the various sections and members of the choir answering one another from different areas of the church.
In addition to this major Spanish première of The Path of MIracles, Tenebrae will offer a programme of Renaissance music, including works by Alonso Lobo, Giovanni Allegri and Tomás Luis de Victoria, in concerts scheduled for San Juan de Ortega, Frómista and Ponferrada.
