Solsona Early-Music Festival : Music and dance in Purcell’s time
15-06-2006
Concerts and courses about Purcell and his contemporaries form the basis of this year’s Solsona Early Music Course and Festival. From 14 to 21 July, 2006. The courses focus on the music of the great English composer, the aesthetic and interpretative aspects of the music of the late-seventeenth century, as well as discover their capacity for dramatic expression.

The singing and instrumental courses are designed according to the specific capabilities of each participant and all participants practice the solo repertory, play chamber music, sing in the choir and take part in the concert, "Come all ye songsters of the sky".

For their part, the dance students will prepare dances from Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, which will be presented during the concert "One Charming Night", performed by the instructors of the course under the baton of Markus Schikora on 21 July.

The musicians chosen to run this year’s courses are Jordi Argelaga, baroque oboe, Xavier Carrau, baroque violin and viola, Ricard Casañ, baroque trumpet, Jordi Comellas, viola da gamba, Ignasi Jordà, harpsichord, Andreas Martin, lute and guitar, Pilar Montoya, historical dance, Markus Schikora, voice and Joan Vives, recorder.

In addition to those already mentioned, the concerts scheduled to take place are: the program "Ye gentle spirits of the air, appear!", music for violin and harpsichord in England during the seventeenth century, performed by Xavier Carrau (violin) and Ignasi Jordà (harpsichord) on 14 July; and popular "Country Dances", conducted by Pilar Montoya on 19 July.
