The Mass is based on Josquin's Nimphes nappés which is performed here before the Mass. Since the Mass was written before the 1570 Council of Trent missal its Gradual became obsolete by 1598, which opened the possibility of its substitution with another by Guerrero, as is believed to have occurred. The Tract which is missing from Richafort's Mass, is also by Guerrero. As motet for the consecration is Alonso Lobo's widely famous Versa est in luctum, written "Ad exequias Philippus II Catholicis Regis Hispaniæ." The Mass ends with a prayer for the dead also by Lobo Libera me, Domine.
To our knowledge, this is the best "Phillip II program" of any that has been proposed, and certainly the most serious. It's a shame that the Chapelle du Roi is not always up to the task at hand, especially lacking in volume, but its performance is certainly not without merits. Perhaps the most appropriate term to describe the performance is correct-in the face of a reconstruction which is, from a historical and musicological point of view, impeccable. MARICARMEN GOMEZ
