The Codex Calixtinus, a manuscript containing a compilation of texts devoted to the cult of St James that have been attributed to Pope Calixtus II, enjoys an uncontested pre-eminence amongst the music associated with the pilgrims’ road to Santiago de Compostela.

The manuscript was produced in the mid-12th century, in an attempt to cater to the needs of worship and pilgrimage in Compostela at that time. Although various versions have survived to this day in a number of different locations, the Compostela copy is the only one to systematically include music and it consists of five books with an appendix containing twenty-two polyphonic settings that have made the Codex Calixtinus a reference work for medieval polyphonic music.

The recording entitled 'Codex Calixtinus', a 4 CD set that was given 5 Stars in our magazine, gathers the virtually complete music found in this manuscript, considered to be the principal body of 12th-century polyphony.

Here at Goldberg we have chosen our magazine number 30, in which Juan Carlos Asensio analyses the Codex Calixtinus and the context in which this manuscript was written, and the set of 4 CDs entitled 'Codex Calixtinus' (5 Stars) to create a Magazine + set of 4 Cds Special Pack about the Codex Calixtinus that will provide you with information about this 12th-century polyphony and enable you enjoy to listening the music compiled for the shrine at Compostela.

WE ARE SORRY BUT HIS OFFER HAS ALREADY EXPIRED

In our Magazine number 30 Juan Carlos Asensio writes a very complete essay entitled 'Codex Calixtinus, The music on the pilgrim's road to Santiago' that explores the obscures origins of the cult of St James in Hispania, explains why the Codex Calixtinus enjoyed uncontested pre-eminence amongst the music associated with the pilgrims’ road to Santiago de Compostela and analyses in detail the musical content of the Codex Calixtinus, which constitutes a compendium of the liturgical music and composition procedures of its period.

The recording entitled 'Codex Calistinus', by Fernando Olbas and the Coro Ultreia and compiled for the shrine at Compostela, consists of a set of 4 CDs which contains the virtually complete music found in this manuscript, considered to be the principal body of 12th-century polyphony in the period. The recording follows the structure of the manuscript, so all the pieces are sung in the order that they occur. Hence the first three discs offer the vigil Mass, the antiphons and responsories of Matins and the other hours, and parts of the two Masses of the day; while the fourth disc offers all of the polyphony, concluding with Dum pater familias the most popular of the chants.

This excellent recording, that was given 5 Stars in our magazine , is complemented by an elegant packaging and each disc comes with its texts and translations. The case includes a 96-page booklet of notes where many colour reproductions of the codex are also printed.
