The Antwerp Festival - “Laus Polyphoniae 2006” - is being held this year from 19 to 27 August under the general heading “Conquest and Reconquest” and focuses on some of the great works of the historical Spanish and Ibero-American repertoires. The participation of groups and individual artists from Spain and Latin America is eloquent proof of the growing interest in these repertoires throughout Europe.

Gabriel Garrido and his Ensemble Elyma feature large in this festival, which they open with a programme devoted to "La Virgen y el Niño". They make return appearances on 23 and 25 August with another two programmes entitled "El Fénix de México" and "Cuzco: imágenes de la ciudad perdida".

Other Spanish and Ibero-American groups taking part in the festival include La Trulla de Bozes, with two concerts on 20 August, "Fiesta de San Bernardo" and "Sevilla, puerta de América". Also performing on August 20 are Jordi Savall with Hesperion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya, who will be giving the programme "Los paraísos perdidos". Música Temprana, an ensemble of Portuguese and Latin American musicians, will perform a programme entitled "Harmonieën uit Chuquisaca" on August 21, followed on 22 August by a concert entitled "Codex Trujillo". On 22 August the group Orphenica Lyra under the direction of José Miguel Moreno will take the stage in a performance of "Música en El Quijote". Also on 22 August, Josep Cabré’s ensemble La Colombina will present their programme entited "Ensaladas", returning the following day with a concert entitled "Música en tiempos de Felipe II".

On 26 August, the guitarist Rafael Bonavita will perform the programme "Un paseo por el barroco" prohibido. The festival closes on 27 August with a concert entitled "Nostra Donna" performed jointly by Begoña Olavide’s Ensemble Mudéjar from Spain and Patricia Bovi’s Ensemble Micrologus from France.

Programmes of Spanish and Latin American music will also be performed by other European musicians such as Patricia Bovi and Adolfo Broegg, the Huelgas Ensemble, Zefiro Torna & Triatu, Ensemble Kapsberger, and Charivari Agreable.
