4 to 20 October 2008. Every year, the Leipzig-based Neue Bachgesellschaft, founded in 1900, selects a different city to host the festival honouring the composer whose name it bears. In this, the festival’s 83rd year, Salzburg is the chosen venue for the renowned Bachfest, and from 4 to 20 October a programme of 58 events will be taking place in that city so steeped in music history and in the surrounding area – Goldegg, Mattsee, Laufen, Tittmoning and Mondsee.
27 June to 27 July 2008. The 2008 styriarte Festival (the name combines ‘styria’ – Styria being the Austrian province whose capital is Graz – and ‘arte’) stands out for the diversity and audacity of its programme. As styriarte’s Internet site explains, the festival was founded on the idea of “creating a stronger bond between Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the pioneering early music conductor, and Graz, his native city.
21 to 25 May 2008. Along with its annual International Early Music Symposium, the Early Music Institute of Anton Bruckner University in Linz will be organising an Orchestral Academy for the first time. The events will take place this May in Weinberg Castle.
