| It is a contradiction to speak about historical performance in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). In the country created out of the German ashes of the Second World War, no useable original instruments were available and copies were simply not made. The State (the only source of possible financing) did not permit professional groups, chamber orchestras or anything other than official symphony orchestras to be formed. Moreover, music schools and research and musicological institutes were simply not interested in this issue. For this reason, in communist Germany the history of the Aufführungs-Praxis, that is, historically based performance, is the history of the AKADEMIE FÜR ALTE MUSIK BERLIN. |
