Baroque music to rank with the very best

Hannover's famous Herrenhausen Gardens are closely linked to the name of George Frideric Handel, "Court Director of Music to the Elector of Hannover" in the days of George I. The "Herrenhausen Baroque" series, which forms part of the Herrenhausen Festival Weeks with their long and illustrious tradition, has rapidly achieved international standing and made a name for itself on the German festival scene. In the historic Gallery Building, where Handel himself made music, audiences are able to experience performances of baroque music that rank with the very best.

One of the highlights will no doubt be Agostino Steffanis Opera “Orlando generoso” (world premiere after 250 years on 28 June 2008). In addition, no lover of baroque music could be anything but thrilled by the prospect of Henry Purcell's "King Arthur", staged by Colin Blumenau 2007, is a joint production with the Halle Handel Festival, the Goethe Theater Bad Lauchstädt, the Potsdam Sanssouci Music Festival, the Bayreuth Baroque Festival, the Kissinger Winterzauber Festival and the Theatre Royal Bury St. Edmunds.

Under others there will be performing I Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca, Il Cpmplesso Barocco directed by Alan Curtis, FestspielOrchester Göttingen directed by Nicholas McGegan, NDR Radiophilhar-monie, Lautten Compagney, La Venexiana, Musica Angelica Baroque and Wiener Akademie directed by Martin Haselböck and Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover directed by Konrad Junghänel.

After every event, enchanting illuminations transform the baroque gardens into a green festive hall where it is a delight to linger and stroll.

Herrenhäuser Gärten
Hanover has one of the most beautiful baroque gardens in the world. Visit the Großen Garten with its garden theatre, the labyrinth and one of formerly the highest fontains in Europe. The garden – modeled after a french version - was created by Sophie of the Pfalz. The opening of the Niki de Saint Phalle grotte in May 2003 added a further attraction to the garden.
