ANONIMO

Ensemble Micrologus

Opus 111 OP 30215
2000 - 65:27 min.

This disc contains a secular repertoire originating from three manuscripts that date from the second half of the 15th century and are related to the Neapolitan court. All three contain a blend of French, Spanish and Italian repertoires, a reflection of a court which was a meeting point for three cultures: Spanish, or more precisely Castilian-Aragonese culture, brought to Naples with the crowning of Alfonso the Magnanimous; the Italian culture belonging to the region, and Franco-Flemish influences, which were of particular importance given that Franco-Flemish composers dominated European music at the time. The disc is divided into three sections devoted to French, Spanish and Italian music respectively. A fourth section, consisting of festive works, comes in response to the idea behind the disc: the realisation of a repertoire characteristic of a Neapolitan celebration, but not necessarily from a courtly setting.

The performances are entrusted to a vocal quintet (four male singers and one female voice), with the addition of a wind ensemble imitating that of the alta capella typical of the fifteenth century and a string ensemble consisting of harp, lute and viola d'arco, with sporadic use of the then-new viola da gamba. The flavour created is an evocative one. The tender and at the same time elegant language of many of the texts becomes more mischievous and insinuating in others, alternating with entertaining and lively instrumental pieces which are an invitation to dance. All this occurs naturally, without stridency. A supreme show of musical know-how and a model to be taken into account by performers and scholars. MARICARMEN GÓMEZ
