The Cancioneiro de Elvas is one of the most important Portuguese manuscripts containing Renaissance music. It consists of two parts, only the first of which includes music. This consists of copies of 65 polyphonic songs grouped into four sections: the first and the third are largely made up of villancicos in the Spanish language dating from around 1500.

25 pieces have been chosen for this CD, ten of which are vocal. It is striking that all the vocal works pertain to the Spanish repertory, including two famous villancicos, Romerico tu que vienes by the Salamancan composer Juan del Encina, and the Portuguese composer Pedro de Escobar's Passame por Dios barquero. Equally surprising is the fact that the text of some of those selected to be performed using instruments is Portuguese. It's a pity the performers have not made the most of the occasion to promote a little-known Portuguese-language repertory, if not one that is completely unknown, instead of keeping to one in which the addition of a new song is of little importance at this point in time.

The trio is made up of a countertenor, Vitor Lima, lutenist Paulo Galvão, and flautist Joaquim Galvão. The singer is tremendous and the lutenist even more so; it's a shame the pronunciation of the texts isn't as accurate as it could be, although Lima's diction is exemplary. The flute, which is used to double the voice or embellish the melody, frequently gets in the way, its sound impeding our enjoyment of an almost perfect duet. The flute line is nevertheless performed correctly in the instrumental pieces, accompanied by discrete and very appropriate percussion. In general this is a good disc, although it is somewhat disorientated. MARICARMEN GOMEZ
